Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

This is a culinary herb that you can grow on your doorstep. It is a staple herb for fish and you can grow it as a hedge or specimen pot plant. Grow it close to a path since the scent from brushing its leaves is evocative. Keep well pruned, otherwise it will become straggly.
Price: Pay about £1 for a small plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Perennial herb
  • Height: 96.5cm(38in)
  • Spread: 71.12cm(28in)
  • Situation: Open, sunny
  • Soil Type: Poor to medium rich
Herb gardens should never be without this belle from the Mediterranean. In the wild it grows short, thin and straggly, but in the garden it responds more to tender loving care and good soil. There are a number of cultivars with different coloured flowers.

Not only is it good as a herb, but it is superbly attractive to honeybees and bumblebees so do plant it in the Wild Garden as well as the kitchen garden. Older plants do get somewhat tired, gnarled and patchy, so it may be just as well to replace with new varieties after a few years.

Best With:
Best grown with Honesty (Lunaria) growing through it in the spring.
