Rodgersia (Rodgersia sambucifolia)

Rodgersias are very distinctive plants that have attractive leaves and flowers. They look good in borders and are plants to grow other plants around, rather than to grow alongside other plants. There are six species from which to choose and the tall flowers are either white, creamy or pink.
Price: Expect to pay about £3.50 for a small plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Perennial
  • Height: 101cm (40in)
  • Spread: 55.88cm (22in)
  • Situation: Shady border or light woodland
  • Soil Type: Medium to rich
These are very tall members of the saxifrage family that are native to light woodlands, glades and mountain streams in Asia. Typically of saxifrages, they produce lots of flowers, and in this species the flowers are all on a tall flowering stem. The colourful flowers are ideal for a Shady Garden or for light woodland at the edge of a formal garden.

Rodgersias are also excellent for their foliage effects, or as architectural plants since their large leaves may be either palmate or pinnate shaped. Grow them in rich soil and make sure they do not dry out, otherwise they are quite hardy once established.
