Nasturtium (Tropaeolum)
Nasturtiums are real good-lookers and are very easy to grow from seed. They have bright petal colours ranging from yellow to red and orange, and they grow fast. During the summer they produce long fleshy stems from which the colourful flowers emerge.
Price: Pay about £1 for a packet of seed or £4.50 mail-order for some species.
The Knowledge
- Plant Type: Climbing annual
- Height: 2.13m (7ft)
- Spread: 1.21m (4ft)
- Situation: Sunny slope or on canes
- Soil Type: Medium rich
For a quick and easy display of summer colour you cannot go wrong with nasturtiums. Either plant the seed where you want them, or grow them up on a windowsill and plant them out. Grow them in pots and containers or up canes like runner beans. Get them to grow up a wigwam. Keep them well watered and cut them back if necessary. The result will be bold summer colours that will continue until the early frosts. Collect the seed for next year.
Looking Good:
Go to the Kingston Estate Gardens in South Hams, Devon during July and August to see the amazing colours of nasturtiums.
Best With:
Best with runner beans or cascading over the top of a wall.
