Garden Highs - Outdoor Reading Room

In this episode, the team create an outdoor reading room for a primary school in Kent...

Chris and Mark get to grips with living willow to create an outdoor reading room for Hills Grove Primary School in Kent. The space planned for the reading room is an underused area of playing field which is adjacent to the school buildings and main playground area. Head teacher, Kathy Thompson wants the new reading area to be able to be used all year round so seating will be incorporated.

Inspiration Station:

As well as being home to an eco system of birds and wildlife The London Wetlands Centre (tel: (020) 8409 4400) in Barnes is dotted with beautiful willow sculptures. The sculptures are living willow and blend into the atmospheric surroundings of this beautiful setting. The sculptures include a willow archway approximately 4-5 metres high emerging from the rushes and beautiful willow fencing which is woven in a diamond pattern and encloses areas of the centre.

Chris and Mark also pay a visit to willow artist, Deborah Hart who will assist in the construction of the living willow room. Debbie works with living willow creating sculptures and weaving diverse shapes and patterns. She is available for commissions around the Essex and greater London areas.

Deborah is also running courses in willow weaving in March and June of this year. For more information please contact her at Writtle College on (01245) 420705.
