You can spend a lot of the springtime looking after young petunias, feeding them once a week and watering them daily, to arrive at superb plants covered in attractive flowers. Summertime is when petunias are in their element, lapping up the sunshine and producing lots of colour. Quick colour fixes can be had by buying hanging baskets burgeoning with flowers, but remember to keep them well watered, and dead-headed to encourage more flowers to come.

There are basically two sorts of petunias to look out for, those with large flowers, called Grandiflora, and those with smaller flowers called Multiflora.

Looking Good:
Look out for vibrant beds of petunias in municipal gardens during the summer months.

Best With:
Try them with violet lobelias in a hanging basket.
