Passion Flower (Passiflora)

Passion Flower (Passiflora)

Many passion flowers are originally rainforest plants but they do tolerate our garden conditions very well. Their star-like flowers are wonderful to look at, especially when the plant is scrambling over pergolas and arches, or rambling through shrubs. Shown here is 'Venus'.
Price: Allow £4 for a good plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Climber, perennial
  • Height: 5.49m (18ft)
  • Spread: 3.65m (12ft)
  • Situation: Shady to sunny
  • Soil Type: Medium to rich
Growing passion flowers in the garden could not be simpler. For a start, they're readily available from garden centres and mail order suppliers. They're excellent climbers and will smother a wall or trellis with their foliage. They range from fully hardy to frost tender and the plants, once established, will often survive cold snaps. Passion flowers come in a wide range of colours, including reds, whites, blues and pinks. These flowers are produced over a long period, on long stems with lots of buds. The orange fruits look superb at the end of the season against the ample foliage.

Looking Good:
Go to Greenholm Nurseries, Clevedon, Somerset, during the summer to see the National Collection of Passifloras in full glory.

Best With:
Try them intertwined with climbing roses, or scrambling through a Pittosporum shrub.
