Geranium (Pelargonium)

Geranium (Pelargonium)

The world of pelargoniums, popularly called geraniums, is a huge one, with many different varieties coming out each year. There are some classic ones to choose, such as this 'Mr Henry Cox', which is fancy-leaved. These leaf colours make the plant what's known as a golden tricolour. There are many geraniums like this to choose from.
Price: Expect to pay about £3 for a good plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Annual
  • Height: 30.48cm (12in)
  • Spread: 25.4cm (10in)
  • Situation: Sunny
  • Soil Type: Medium to rich
Golden tricolours like this are worth having, since the range of colours is useful in the garden when you are looking to make up matching colour palettes. Another to try is 'Mangel's Variegated', an equally good performer. The strong aromatic scent from the leaves gives these plants their special characteristic, and marks them off from species geraniums that are scentless.

Grow Pelargoniums as annuals, starting off with new plants each spring. Some can be kept in greenhouses, or as houseplants for several years. They do catch whitefly and the leaves may be eaten by caterpillars, so check for pests frequently.

Looking Good:
Go to Fibrex Nurseries to see the National Collection of Pelargoniums during the summer period.

Best with:
Team them with silvery wands of Helichrysum.
