Primrose (Primula)

Primrose (Primula)

Primulas are bright and cheerful and can even liven up a dank winter day. Some varieties flower precociously before Christmas and well into spring and always look good. Often they provide the only colour when the soil is bare and the snow is falling. The new varieties are full of different colour combinations, so try them out. Shown here is 'Joker Carmine with Eye'.
Price: Expect to pay about £2.50 for a pallet of six new cultivars, less for regular varieties.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Annual
  • Height: 12.7cm (5in)
  • Spread: 10.16cm (4in)
  • Situation: Shady to sunny
  • Soil Type: Poor to rich
Growing primulas is especially exciting since the seeds can be sown in the spring or late winter, outside or in a cold frame. The small plants can then be transferred into their desired position and their progress monitored. When primulas are put into a winter hanging basket with heathers they make a striking display.

Alternatively, they grow well in window boxes and patio pots. Pests are generally not a problem, though occasionally a fungus will zap the roots, killing the plant, and there may be problems from slugs and leafhoppers.

Looking Good:
Check out the bright primulas at Marwood Hill Gardens, Barnstaple, Devon, in March and April.

Best With:
Try them with snowdrops and heathers during the winter months.
