Looking After Your Garden Tools

Good quality garden tools are not cheap, but if you take good care of them they should last for many years. Regular maintenance during the gardening season will ensure they always work reliably, as well as taking less effort to use.

Sprayers can be damaged if traces of chemical sprays are not cleaned out thoroughly - the metal parts will corrode and become unusable. After use, add clean water, shake thoroughly and rinse out. Repeat at least once, then add more clean water, pump up the sprayer and leave spraying until it's empty to clean out the pipes.

Tip: Keep your spade and other digging tools rust free by storing the blades in a bucket of sand mixed with a couple of pints of new engine oil. Do not use old engine oil as it's highly polluting.

Sharpening
Inspect the edges of trowels and spades for nicks caused when hitting stones. Use a metal file to grind the edge flat again. Wipe with an oily rag to keep rust free until next use. Sharpen shears with a carborundum stone or buy a specially made sharpener.

Adjust rotary mower blades so they cut cleanly all along the edge. You can buy ready-made 'clip on and push' sharpeners. If your mower is beyond sharpening yourself, send for a service now - don't wait until you need to use it in the spring!

Over winter
Before storing wooden-handled tools over winter, apply linseed oil to the handles.
Clean out your sprayer once more but this time use warm water with a little detergent added. Rinse out with clean water a number of times and drain before storing.

Store tools in a dry atmosphere - it's better to hang them on a wall than place on the floor. Inspect occasionally and if any rust is developing, wipe them over with an oily rag.
Electrical tools should be stored indoors, not in a damp shed.

Check mowers and strimmers and clean off all grass residues. For metal-bladed types, wipe the blade. For nylon line types, check how much line you have left and buy a spare reel ready for use in the spring.
