Market Traders' Tips
Columbia Road market traders have a wealth of plant knowledge and can be a great source of advice if you need some help with buying plants for your particular garden situation. Here are some of their top tips, as featured on the programme, Columbia Road Gardens...
Cordylines "Native to Australia, Cordyline palms are sensitive to frost. In winter, it's best to protect them water from getting into the centre of the leaves. Tie the leaves together in a bunch and wrap the plant in fleece." (David Williams)
Bamboo "Bamboo can live in any climate but they are most useful to the gardener as a plant to fill spaces at the back of the garden - it grows quickly and doesn't need a lot of light." (Colin Roberts)
Ivy "Ivy is a vigorous-growing versatile plant that's suitable as a wall climber, ground cover or for hanging baskets. Regular trimming will make sure it doesn't get out of hand." (George Cladwell)
Winter gardens "When planting any garden it's always a good idea to include some winter plants - plants that look their best during the winter months like holly and evergreens that can withstand frost." (Colin Roberts)
Hanging baskets "Hanging baskets are a great source of colour throughout the season but they often dry out on hot days. Combat this by including some water-retention gel in the compost when you plant them." (Shane Hartnett)
Fragrant flowers "When planting, be sure to spread a few fragrant plants like jasmine, honeysuckle, wisteria or herbs about so that your garden not only looks, but also smells, fantastic." (Les Mclean)
