A highly reliable perennial, yarrow will always produce plenty of white heads of flowers. It's a good filler for the herbaceous border and there are also different colour varieties to choose. It's a native British species and is as tough as old boots.
Price: Expect to pay about 50p for a small plant, £1 for a larger plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Perennial
  • Height: 40cm (16.71in)
  • Spread: 30cm (11.8in)
  • Situation: Herbaceous border or wild flower patch
  • Soil Type: Poor
The advantage of growing native British wild flower species is that they can cope with all the awful weather thrown at them. They are also resistant to pests and diseases and they also look good. Yarrow does not have to have fancy soil conditions, and it will grow anywhere in the garden. You may see this growing on roadside verges, but in the garden it will grow more vigorously because of the better soil conditions.

There are lots of different varieties and species to choose, including double white, pink, red and yellow and dwarf forms. White is a versatile colour to mix with a variety of companions in the herbaceous border.
