Trumpet Vine (Campsis x Tagliabuana)

Bright and colourful, this vigorous climber is for a warm wall that gets lots of sunshine. It needs plenty of space and will make a fine foliage effect before breaking out into bundles of buds and flowers.
Price: Expect to pay between £2 for a small plant and £14 for a good specimen.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Perennial climber
  • Height: 10.7m (35ft)
  • Spread: 6.1m (20ft)
  • Situation: Sunny
  • Soil Type: Reasonably fertile
At the nursery you will find at least two species of Trumpet Vine (or Trumpet Creeper) and a number of hybrids and cultivars. The leaves are often dark-hued and the flowers are either yellow or various shades of orange.

You need plenty of patience to grow this climber: it can be relatively slow to fill its required position. But it's so full of vigour, so attractive and so bold when it does arrive, that it's bound to make an important statement in the garden. Its summer flowers are incredibly attractive and a good specimen will litter the ground with spent petals.

Looking Good:
Check out this brightly coloured climber at the Cambridge University Botanic Garden during July.

Best With:
It's a good looker by itself, but it can be grown with a vigorous climbing rose that's able to compete with it for height.
