Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus)

Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus)

Sunflowers always attract attention, first because of their bright yellow colours, and second because of their size. Now things have changed completely. There are now dwarf sunflowers and varieties that are maroon and almost black. However, they're all good lookers. Shown here is the 'Sunny' variety.
Price: Expect to pay about £2 for a packet of seeds, or £1.50 per plant.

It's not only children who like to grow sunflowers from seed. Adults do, too! Nevertheless, children adore sunflowers and have great fun with varieties like 'Teddy Bear', with its double, fluffy flowers. Sunflowers grow well in a patio pot.

You can get a lot of enjoyment out of growing these plants from seed because they do come on quickly and produce flowers from midsummer onwards. Grow taller varieties at the back of the border and smaller ones in pots that can be moved around, or sunk into borders as if they had always been there. It's worth keeping large flowers to produce seeds for the following year.

Looking Good:
Go to Pashley Manor, Ticehurst, East Sussex to see amazing sunflowers in July.

Best With:
