Decking for Beginners
Decking is an increasingly popular way of adding both style and practicality to a garden. But is there an easy way for a beginner to lay it? Our gardens expert offers his advice.
Dear Sibe,
What is the cheapest and easiest way for complete novices to put some decking in the garden and make it look attractive?
Thanks,
Samantha
Our gardens expert replies:
Hello Samantha,
As is often the case, the cheapest way to do something will often deteriorate quicker and will never look as good as a well-constructed piece of decking. The easiest way would probably be to pay someone else to do it!
Basically, decking is just a wooden platform, securely constructed on firm foundations and protected from excessive moisture below. Something similar to decking can be obtained by purchasing timber squares from, for example, a garden centre. These are intended to lay onto a hardcore and sand foundation using the same principles as laying slabs, and may be adequate for your purposes - it all depends on the effect you are trying to achieve. There are also decking kits available, though the standard of materials in these can leave a lot to be desired.
If you want proper decking and you are sure it is suitable for your garden (certainly never in a shady, damp area), then it could add considerably to your enjoyment of your garden and even increase your house value if properly constructed.
Good luck!
