Yellow Star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum Dubium)

The usual form of Star of Bethlehem is white, but this is even better looking. The waxy orange flowers are borne above the plant and last a couple of weeks in great splendour. Grow it in a small pot so that it can be displayed to maximum advantage.
Price: Expect to pay £3-£4 for a plant in bud.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Bulb, perennial
  • Height: 27.94cm (11in)
  • Spread: 12.7cm (5in)
  • Situation: Sunny
  • Soil Type: Medium to rich soil
In the wild, Star of Bethlehem is often seen on European mountain tops. It looks stunning, breaking through the grass in early spring and producing magnificent blooms. This yellow species performs particularly well in gardens and it has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

Often sold as a potted plant, it makes a great houseplant that can be put into the garden afterwards. The bulbs can be raised and divided during the winter period. There are well over 20 species of Ornithogalum to enjoy.

Looking Good:
Look for the alpine Star of Bethlehem at Kerrachar Gardens in northwest Scotland during June.

Best With:
