African Daisy (Osteospermum)

African Daisy (Osteospermum)

Osteospermums are some of the most beautiful members of the daisy family and they perform very well in pots and containers. Their colours range from white through to yellow, pink and deep purple. The plants produce masses of flowers that continue with dead-heading through the season.
Price: Expect to pay around £1.50 for a plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Annual
  • Height: 35.56cm (14in)
  • Spread: 25.4cm (10in)
  • Situation: Sunny
  • Soil Type: Medium to rich
The most bizarre osteospermum is one called 'Whirlygig': its white flowers look as if they are fringed by tapestry lace. For the most part osteospermums are fairly trouble-free plants that brighten up many gardens. Buy them small, making sure you feed and water them regularly to make a large plant with masses of flowers by mid-summer.

They come from South Africa, where they like it hot, so always put them in full sun to get the most out of them. They're ideal for patios and steps. They are best treated as annuals, buying new stock each year.

Looking Good:
Go to Castle Howard, near York, any time during the summer to see osteospermums.

Best With:
They work well with other tall daisies. See also Hot and Dry Garden for more ideas.
