Iceland Poppy (Papaver Nudicaule)

Iceland Poppy (Papaver Nudicaule)

Poppies always look good, whatever the species. And in some of the species, they naturally come in a variety of colours. So grow these poppies for a natural medley of colour on your doorstep. Originally from the wilds of Northern Europe and Asia, they are now comfortably at home in gardens.
Price: Expect to pay about £1.50 for a plant or a packet of seeds.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Biennial
  • Height: 43.18cm (17in)
  • Spread: 33.02cm (13in)
  • Situation: Shady to sunny
  • Soil Type: Poor to medium
Growing from seed is a good way of making a big display of these poppies, since not all nurseries carry the plants. Sowing the plants in the summer will produce flowers the following year as a biennial, though the plant will also act as a perennial. This poppy can be displayed as an integral part of a herbaceous border or it can be grown in a more informal manner, as a drift of different colours in a wildflower meadow. There are at least ten different varieties of Iceland Poppy to choose from including 'Champagne Bubbles' and the Wonderland Series.

Looking Good:
Look out for the multicoloured poppy at Burford House Gardens, Tenbury Wells, during July.

Best With:
They look great by themselves, since they come in different hues, but have a look at Traditional Garden and Cottage Garden for more ideas.
