Nerine (Nerine Bowdenii)

Nerine (Nerine Bowdenii)

Stunning to look at during the late autumn, nerines make a welcome splash of pink just when it's really needed. Well after the summer colours have faded, bright blossoms of nerines open from their long stems to reveal magnificent pink flowers on large heads. The more heads the merrier!
Price: Expect to pay £1 per bulb.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Bulb, perennial
  • Height: 58.4cm (23in)
  • Spread: 22.86cm (9in)
  • Situation: Shady to sunny aspect
  • Soil Type: Medium rich
The good thing about nerines is that they stay in flower for 4-6 weeks. That's not bad for a plant happiest growing year on year out of a container, with very little management. The bulbs can be raised after a few years, and the small bulbs can be removed from the older bulbs and allowed to grow on.

Nerines can also be grown in borders, especially near the edge, where their bright whites, oranges and pinks make excellent colour statements.

Looking Good:
Look out for nerines at Exbury Gardens in the New Forest during September.

Best With:
Nerines look best by themselves, since they have such strident flowers. For more ideas, see Traditional Garden or Shady Garden.
