Nemesia (Nemesia)

Nemesias have very dainty flowers that look good in containers. They grow as attractive blocks of colour at the edge of window pots, baskets and in borders. There are plenty of colour choices, so they are useful aides to garden design. Shown here is 'Blue Lagoon'.
Price: Expect to pay about £2 for a plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Annual
  • Height: 17.78 (7in)
  • Spread: 28cm (11in)
  • Situation: Damp, sunny
  • Soil Type: Medium rich
The usual colour for nemesias is blue, but there are several varieties from which to choose, including white, lavender, yellow, purple and red, often with two or three colours in the same petals. Belonging to the foxglove family they have flowers that are attractive to some insects. If you want lots more flowers, then pinch out lead shoots regularly and wait for the side shoots to flower.

Nemesias can be grown from seed, or cuttings can be made in late summer. They like damp and sunny conditions, simulating their natural coastal habitat from South Africa.

Best With:
Try them with other short-growing annuals such as petunias. For more ideas, see Traditional Garden or Cottage Garden.
