Daffodil (Narcissus)

Daffodil (Narcissus)

Daffodils are so jolly and so easy to grow. They brighten up the garden with their egg-coloured flowers, and make a big colour splash in dark areas that have been drab all winter. What else could be simpler than digging in a few bulbs in the autumn and waiting for the magic in the spring? Shown here is 'Dwarf Martinette'.

Price: Allow £5 for a big sack of bulbs in the supermarket or expect to pay around £4 for six more sought-after bulbs.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Bulbs, perennial
  • Height: 40.60cm (16in)
  • Spread: 35.4cm (10in)
  • Situation: Anywhere
  • Soil Type: Poor to rich
To make natural groups of daffodils gently throw handfuls of the bulbs over the ground. Where they land, plant them using a trowel or special bulb planter. This way you will have drifts of colours.

Daffodils become more numerous as the years pass because they produce small bulbs off the main bulbs and these will then flower, too. There are hundreds of varieties from which to choose, and they can be planted all over the garden, including wooden troughs, window boxes and herbaceous borders. Some varieties are good for growing indoors as houseplants.

Best With:
Daffodils look good with multi-coloured primroses and, for contrast, with bright red potted azaleas that can be moved in and out of a daffodil drift for different colour effects. For more inspiration, see Traditional Garden and Cottage Garden.
