Blazing Star (Liatris Spicata)

Blazing Star (Liatris Spicata)

A fun perennial to have around the garden, these American natives pop out of the ground like large torches and are great treats in the herbaceous border. As their name suggests, they blaze with colour. Their height and vibrancy can be usefully deployed in a well-planned border.
Price: Allow £3 for a good plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Perennial
  • Height: 53.3cm (21in)
  • Spread: 25.4cm (10in)
  • Situation: Sunny border
  • Soil Type: Medium to rich
Toughened on the North American prairies, these plants are fully hardy in gardens and once established they'll reappear regularly, year after year. So consider where you will plant them in the border, perhaps mid-way from the front or towards the back. They are so bright they can act as lead plants or markers in the garden.

Insects are attracted to these plants, sometimes known as Gay Feathers after the fluffy nature of the flowering clusters. The plant would not look out of place in a wildflower garden or some kind of natural or butterfly garden. The seeds are great for birds.

Looking Good:
Look out for the bright flowers of Liatris at the Poyntzfield Herb Nursery, Black Isle in Scotland, during the summer.

Best With:
Team them with the contrasting, daisy-like flower heads of Tanacetum. For more ideas, take a look at the Traditional Garden.
