Kalanchoes come from South Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australia and are quite used to heat. They are succulents, so they have tough stems and flowers and can conserve a lot of moisture. This is why they make such useful houseplants. There are lots of species and varieties from which to choose. One species, Kalanchoe daigremontiana, is also called the Mexican Hat plant, or Maternity plant, or 'Mother of a Thousand Babies' because it produces tiny plantlets on its fleshy leaves.
