Morning Glory (Ipomoea Hederacea)

Morning Glory (Ipomoea Hederacea)

It's easy to grow these inveterate climbers. They grow fast and look good in all their great variety of colour. They perform best in strong sunshine and, when well-watered, will produce plenty of flower. Shown here is 'Pearly Gates'.
Price: Expect to pay £1.50 for seed, or £1.80 for a plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Annual
  • Height: 9.86m(6ft)
  • Spread: 1.2m(4ft)
  • Situation: Sunny or shady
  • Soil Type: Medium rich
Not completely unrelated to the familiar bindweed that belongs to a different genus (Calystegia), Morning Glories come in different species and cultivars, many with exciting, almost vibrant reds and pinks. They are enormously attractive to insects and are frequently grown in naturalistic gardens.

Morning glories can be grown up triangles in patio pots, or up trellises and fences. They put on a lot of leaf growth before flowering and can play a useful part in screening wire fences. It is worth collecting the seed, since the plant dies down during the winter. It is best to seed again the next spring to produce another wild display of flowers.

Looking Good:
Look for Morning Glories at Hill House Nursery in the village of Landscove, near Buckfastleigh, Devon.

Best With:
Try them grown up through yellow-flowered Fennel (Foeniculum Vulgare). For more ideas, see the articles on the Cottage Garden and Hi-Tech Garden.
