Sneezeweed (Helenium 'Wyndley')

Sneezeweeds, so named because their pollen can cause sneezing, are native to South and Central America. They grow very well in herbaceous borders and contribute plenty of height, together with yellow, orange and mahogany colours. A well-established clump produces masses of flowers and looks really striking.
Price: Expect to pay about £2 for a starter plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Perennial
  • Height: 58.42cm (23in)
  • Spread: 53.34cm (21in)
  • Situation: Sunny border
  • Soil Type: Rich and well-drained soil
Heleniums or Sneezeweeds are a traditional part of the typical herbaceous border. Because of their relative size they are usually grown about mid-way between the front and back. They need to be staked and supported to prevent wind damage, and they can be prevailed upon to support scrambling Clematis such as the Viticellas.

There is a great range of Sneezeweeds, with different colours and heights to choose from. They represent good value for money because they give a lot of bulk to a border. They also have plenty of flowers that stay in flower during the summer months.

Looking Good:
Look out for Heleniums at Abraxas Gardens, Frome, Somerset, during July and August.

Best With:
Other varieties of Heleniums or with Clematis (Clematis 'Wada's Primrose'). Find more information in Traditional Garden.
