How to Renovate a Garden Pond continued...

The most important thing is to gently scoop out any little critters you find and keep them safe in a tank of pond water until they are ready to go back. You are sure to find frogs, newts and even fish so it is a great learning experience for all involved. Another great tip is to keep a large bucketful of silt to put back in, it will be full of beneficial micro-organisms that will help the new water come back to life.

When the pond is empty remove any water plants that need dividing and keep them either in a water tank or keep them moist in a shady spot aside ready to replant. Check the liner for any damage and repair accordingly. Once the pond is clean then simply refill it, and put in the silt you have saved. Replant marginals and then put back the aquatic plants. Once the pond is filled then put back the animals.

It is best to do this during late autumn or winter to minimise damage to wildlife and aim to complete the work in one day to minimise stress on any fish and other creatures.

I hope this helps
