Garden Diary: March

Crocuses, Easter eggs and orchids – this month there's a selection of traditional spring events for all the family at gardens throughout Britain. But how about trying something a little 'alternative' this month? When there are tree frogs, pineapples and magic mushrooms on the agenda, it'll be hard to resist…

Behind the Scenes at Sissinghurst
On 8th March, there's a chance to go behind the scenes at one of Britain's most romantic gardens, Sissinghurst, with Head Gardener Alexis Datta. The creation of writer Vita Sackville-West and her husband Sir Harold Nicolson, Sissinghurst Gardens (main picture) lie in the grounds of an Elizabethan mansion and include a fabulous white garden. The behind-the-scenes tour starts at 2pm and can include lunch in the Granary Restaurant beforehand. £11 for adults or £32 including lunch. Ring 01580 710700 to book and visit the National Trust website for more details.

Easter Egg Hunts
The National Trust is putting on a series of Easter Egg hunts across the country – one of our favourites is at Killerton in Devon, where the eggs will be strewn throughout the hillside garden and estate and the hunts will be followed by Punch and Judy shows and egg and spoon races in the garden. On Sunday 23rd March at 12 noon and 3pm, no booking necessary. Phone 01392 881345 for more details or check out the National Trust website.

Rainforest Discovery Days
Did you know that Scotland has its very own native temperate rainforest complete with pineapple plants, exotic climbers and tree frogs? Discover more during two special days at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. On Sunday 9th March and Saturday 22nd March, you'll get a chance to handle objects from the forest, do some art activities and go on a short tour. Both events are free and you don't need to book. Find out more on the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh website.

Spring Bulbs at Kew
If March means spring and spring means bulbs for you, then Kew's the place to go this month. With over five million flowering bulbs and vibrant trees in blossom, Kew boasts the biggest display of seasonal colour in the country. Check out the spectacular crocus carpet made up of two million purple and white crocuses (Crocus vernus), nestling woodland snowdrops and cherry and magnolia blossom trees. You can also take a look at Kew's newest glasshouse, the award-winning Davies Alpine House, for a display of alpine flowers and some of the more unusual bulbs in Kew's collection. Open every day from 9.30am until 5pm during March. More info on the Kew Gardens website.
