Garden Diary: February

Whether it's snowdrops or potatoes, family fun at half-term or Valentine's romance, there's plenty going on in the gardens around Britain this month. We check out some of the best events on offer...

Snowdrops at Stowe
February is snowdrop month and there will be hundreds of gardens and historic houses opening up to show them off. For a spectacular display try the breathtakingly beautiful Stowe Gardens - they're open every weekend in February so that you can take in their snowdrop and yellow aconite displays.

With more than 40 monuments, temples and secret corners to explore, plus wooded valleys, ornamental lakes and viewpoints, it's a day out not to be missed. Adults £6.90, children £3.50. Phone the Stowe info line on (01494) 755568 or check out the Stowe Gardens website. And if you do visit, don't forget to leave a Britain's Best review.

Valentine's at Kew
If it's romance you're looking for this month, then why not treat your beloved to a Valentine's evening at Kew Gardens. As well as a four-course dinner in the Orangery with as much as wine and beer as you like, you'll also be treated to a champagne reception on arrival followed by a short trip on the Kew Explorer road train to see a selection of the Henry Moore sculptures lit up at night. Experts will be on hand to talk about the sculptures. Tickets are £110 each and they must be booked in advance by ringing (020) 8332 5655. More details on the Kew Gardens website.

Fountains Fun
Looking for fun for the kids during February half-term? Take a trip to Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire's first World Heritage Site, where they've got some family events lined up. Now dramatic ruins situated in an enormous Medieval deer park, Fountains Abbey also has an elegant Georgian water garden and an Elizabethan mansion to explore. Between February 9th and 24th, there'll be free trails around the estate plus drop-in craft workshops every day from 11am until 3pm. For more info, phone (01765) 608888 or visit the Fountains Abbey website.
