Caring for Umbrella Plants

With their attractive whorls of glossy green leaves, Schefflera or "Umbrella Plants" as they are more commonly known, are extremely popular as houseplants. With a little care, they'll grow as high as your ceiling - just follow Sven's advice on keeping them healthy.

Dear Sven,

I have a lovely umbrella plant in my bedroom that I've had for so long, it's now actually touching the ceiling! It has always had plenty of leaves, but I've noticed that this year, it has started to lose some of its "umbrellas" from the bottom by the soil. Could it be that the plant doesn't like the central heating? Or has it just become too tall for its own good?

Thanks for all your great advice,

Nora

Our Gardens Expert replies:

Hi Nora,

Schefflera or the 'umbrella plant' is a really common house plant that graces millions of homes around the world because it's really easy to grow and look after. The only problems you may find are caused by overwatering, low humidity (often caused by central heating) or by chilling. Seeing as your plant has been happy for so long I would guess that there has been no real change in your care routine so the above are unlikely! The only other reason I can think of is an infestation of spider mites. Take a look at the lower and fallen leaves and check for any dusty looking debris and really small cob webs on the leaves both of which are a sure sign of their presence. If this is the case then treat with a suitable insecticide from your garden centre.

Best of luck,

Sven
