Visitors to a multi-million pound garden are being urged to pick up a paintbrush as they enjoy the scenery, according to reports.

Sunniside gardens are the focus of Assign's (Art Sunderland Initiative Group Network) series of art-based activities, which is being run as part of the Big Draw campaign this week.

Local residents say that the £2 million gardens have made a significant difference to the area.

Since opening in March, their beauty has already attracted many artists.

Bill Harris, of Assign, told the Sunderland Echo: "The idea came about following the recent inception of Sunniside Gardens. It has made such a positive difference to the area, giving residents and visitors a place to go and relax and enjoy the heart of Sunniside.

"We wanted to create an artistic response to what we feel it has brought to this important part of the city."
