October: Miscanthus

This month's plant of the month, as selected by our friends at online garden centre, Crocus.co.uk, is the autumnal Miscanthus or Chinese Silver Grass. Plant in borders to add a natural tone as a backdrop to your more dramatic flowers...

This imposing ornamental grass makes a striking plant for a large, sunny, well-drained site. Quicker to establish than many other varieties of Miscanthus, the foliage and flowers take on beautiful shades of red in the autumn and so really compliment the season. The feathery, brown-gold flower heads, bloom in late summer and early autumn. With an eventual height of 2.2m and spread of 1.2m, this grass will add real volume and substance to your garden. Plant with the sumptuous Dahlia 'Arabian Night', Veronicastrum virginicum f. album, Knautia macedonica, Eupatorium purpureum 'Atropurpureum' or Allium sphaerocepthalon for extra effect.

Position: Full sun
Soil: Fertile, moist, well drained or sandy
Rate of growth: Average
Flowering period: August to September
Flowers: Brown-gold then red
Other features: Arching mid-green leaves
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Garden care: Cut back the withered stems to the ground in early spring. Divide in late spring by removing small sections from the rootball of the mature plant, without digging the complete plant up. (It resents disturbance to the roots)
