Plant of the Month
July: Astrantia 'Moulin Rouge'
This month's plant of the month, as selected by our friends at online garden centre, Crocus.co.uk, is the beautiful Cosmos Astrantia 'Moulin Rouge'.
Astrantias have been cultivated in Britain since the 16th century and have numerous common names, such as melancholy gentleman, Hattie's pincushion and the more well-known masterwort. Its beautiful dark red flowers are tipped with black and are produced from early to late summer. Astrantias are an absolute must-have for a sunny or partially shady spot in the garden, especially in moist soil. This particular variety makes an excellent cut flower too as the flowers will last up to two weeks in a vase.
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Soil: Fertile, moist, preferably humus-rich soil
Rate of growth: Average to fast
Flowering period: June to August
Flowers: Dark red
Other features: Excellent cut flowers
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Garden care: Incorporate plenty of organic matter when planting and water well in dry weather especially newly established plants. Lift and divide large clumps in early spring and apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the plant. Divided specimens may take some time to establish since they don't like having their roots disturbed.
