Plant of the Month
April: Clematis armandii Apple Blossom

April: Clematis armandii Apple Blossom

This month's plant of the month, as selected by our friends at online garden centre, Crocus.co.uk, is the beautiful Clematis armandii Apple Blossom.

This clematis variety has mid-green leaves and blooms in early spring with flowers that are whitish pink in colour and deliciously almond scented. It's a vigorous evergreen climber and is ideal for a sunny, west- or south-facing spot in the garden. For maximum enjoyment of the sweetly scented flowers plant next to a house entrance or well worn path, allowing plenty of space for the plant to grow.

Soil: Fertile, well-drained, neutral soil
Rate of growth: Fast-growing
Flowering period: March to April
Hardiness: Frost hardy
Special precautions: This plant is toxic to dogs if eaten
Garden care: No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the plant needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.

To buy this plant, check out the Crocus website where you can get a plant in a two litre pot for just £12.99, discounted from £19.99.
