Heaven’s Garden: Episodes Six - Ten
Episode Nine
Over the next two episodes we will see the Pot Kiln garden transform again, as we move into late summer. In this episode, Hannah harvests the radishes. Also, the tomato plants are beginning to fruit so Hannah visits Matt at a specialist nursery, ‘Simpson Seeds’, to get some advice about how to care for her tomato plants. Matt gives Hannah some vegetables including a number of varieties of tomatoes to take back to the Pot Kiln, which Mike cooks for a taste test. As the growing season draws to a close Hannah visits Vanessa, a local organic gardener of heritage varieties to get some tips about slug control and planting potatoes for Christmas. Back at the Pot Kiln, Hannah clears the peas and sows phacelia, a type of green manure in their place to help keep the soil in good condition. Also, Hannah picks some Victoria plums from an old tree at the pub, which Mike cooks with venison. This is a dish which he hopes to add to his new menu.
Episode Ten
In the final episode, as we head towards autumn, the sunflowers and pumpkins are cleared from the garden. Hannah makes a final visit to Ryton Organic Gardens in the Midlands, where she gets composting tips from head gardener Helen Lear. Back at the Pot Kiln, Hannah is joined by fruit expert Jim, who helps her plant fan trained apple and plum trees. Hannah also visits a local orchard at Cross Lanes Fruit Farm to talk to grower Gillian Franklin about apple varieties. Hannah and Mike review the garden’s successes and they do a final taste test where tarte tatin are on the menu.
