Heaven's Garden
Heaven's Garden: Episodes One - Five
What exactly is Heaven's Garden all about? Here's a episode-by-episode breakdown to help clear up the matter!
Episode One
At the Pot Kiln pub in Berkshire, we meet Hannah Genders who is creating an organic garden from scratch. Her brief is to create a garden which will supply TV chef and pub owner Mike Robinson with produce for his kitchen. In episode one we see how Hannah creates a design for Mike's garden, with organic principles in mind.
Once the structural design is in place, a team of helpers from nearby Lackham College help begin the transformation. Hannah visits Geoff Hamilton's Paradise Garden at Ryton Organic Gardens in the Midlands to get some advice from Director of Gardens and Gardening Bob Sherman. Back at the Pot Kiln horse manure is added to the garden and Mike makes rhubarb ice cream from one of the only plants which occupied the original garden. This recipe is just a taste of things to come from Heaven's Garden.
Episode Two
Hannah talks through her planting plan with Mike to make sure that her ideas match his needs in his restaurant. We see Hannah and her team of student helpers from Larkham College lay down the garden paths and Hannah puts the first plants into the garden; beans, nasturtiums, sunflowers, oregano, borage and sorrel.
Hannah also visits the organic kitchen garden at the stately home of Audley End in Essex. Here Head Gardener Mike Thurlow gives us advice about growing vegetables in containers and explains organic pest control methods. Hannah finds out about using spent hops on the soil from local brewer Dave.
Episode Three
After discussions with Mike, we see Hannah plant a selection of organic seeds in the Pot Kiln garden. She returns to Ryton Organic Gardens in the Midlands to meet Elaine, an expert propagator. We find out what Elaine has in stock for the season, including rhubarb chard and a variety of lettuces, as well as receiving a few handy hints.
Returning to the Pot Kiln with an armful of plants, we see Hannah plant her gifts, along with those she received from local brewer Dave. Hannah also receives her delivery of baby outdoor tomatoes, and makes a visit to Buckleberry House, where one of Mike's neighbours, Willie Hartley Russell has restored a Victorian Kitchen Garden. Hannah gets some tips from him about gardening organically, and Willie gives Hannah some hazel poles for her runner beans back at the Pot Kiln. Mike makes their first lunch from the garden's produce, tempura nasturtiums.
