Plant of the Month
November: Witch Hazel
This month's plant of the month, as selected by our friends at online garden centre, Crocus.co.uk, is witch hazel (Hamamelis x intermedia Jelena) - a striking specimen plant that's perfect for a woodland edge or sunny shrub border.
A vase-shaped deciduous shrub with clusters of large, fragrant, bright coppery-orange flowers on bare stems in December and January, this witch hazel plant is best grown in fertile, moist, well-drained, neutral to acid soil. The tiered branches of this award-winning form of witch hazel contrast well with the vertical stems of dogwood, like the yellow-olive winter branches of Cornus stolonifera 'Flaviramea'.
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Soil: Moderately fertile, moist, well-drained neutral to acid soil
Rate of growth: Slow-growing
Flowering period: January to February
Flower colour: Bright coppery-orange
Other features: the bright green leaves turn spectacular shades of yellow, orange and red in autumn; valuable for indoor flower arrangements.
Hardiness: fully hardy
Garden care: In early spring remove any misplaced, crossing or diseased branches and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant
