Digging the Dirt: Joe Swift
Joe Swift's encyclopaedic knowledge of plants, gardening and garden design make him one of the best in the business. Plus his dad plays Richard Bucket, Hyacinth's long-suffering husband in the BBC comedy, Keeping Up Appearances. What more could you want in a garden designer? Here's what happened when we got to dig the dirt with Joe...
UKTV Gardens: What's your favourite style of garden/garden design?
Joe: "I suppose the kind of design that I do - sort of contemporary, urban, classic gardens. That's my style really, if you have to pin me down."
UKTV Gardens: What is the coolest plant in the world and why?
Joe: "I think the coolest plant in the world is box because you can sculpt it into any shape or form that you want. Ok, so it doesn't flower, well, it does, but not significantly; but you can mould it like a piece of clay which makes it very useful for garden design."
UKTV Gardens: What was your biggest gardening cock-up?
Joe: "It was on a landscaping job. We over-ordered, ordering about ten times more sand than we actually needed and we had nowhere to put it. It was going all down the street and we ended up paying twice as much as the sand was worth to have it taken away again. It was a bit of a financial disaster."
UKTV Gardens: Is the changeable British weather a gardeners' friend or foe?
Joe: "Friend I think. Most countries in the world don't have the changing climate and the seasons that we have. Our seasons mean we can grow a huge variety of plants and that's why British people are so interested in gardening. If it was the same all year round like in the tropics it would be quite restricting and samey."
UKTV Gardens: Who is your gardening hero and why?
Joe: "It changes, but at the moment it's Christopher Lloyd. He's very outspoken, very experimental and he has worked in his own garden his whole life. He has a real depth of knowledge and he's a great character as well. He's good fun."
