Christmas Rose (Helleborus Niger)

Christmas Rose (Helleborus Niger)

Christmas Roses come out through the festive season, any time from early winter to early spring. They look good among the last of the year's autumn leaves and the bare soil, popping their perfect flowers against the bedraggled leaf litter. Shown here is a 'Harrington Hybrid'.
Price: Expect to pay about £2 per plant or £1.80 for a packet of seeds.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Perennial
  • Height: 4.26cm (14in)
  • Spread: 30.48cm (12in)
  • Situation: Sunny to partially shady
  • Soil Type: Medium to rich
There are many different species and cultivars among the hellebores. The flowers of these Christmas Roses may be flushed with green or pink. It is particularly gratifying to see the flowers of Christmas Rose coming out during the winter period, and even to see them in the snow.

In the wild, they exist in mountainous habitats and are quite used to austere conditions. After flowering the plants can be dug up and divided. They have rhizomes that need to be separated carefully. Alternatively, seeds can be sown in the spring.

Looking Good:
During the festive season look out for these flowers at the Royal Horticultural Society Gardens, Wisley, Surrey.

Best With:
