Price: Expect to pay about £1.20 for a plant.

Gerberas are known by a variety of common names, including African Daisy, Transvaal Daisy and Barberton Daisy, all of which indicate their origin as a wildflower of South Africa.

They are mass-produced and are ideal as gifts or as brightly-coloured houseplants. They range in colour from bright red, through orange to pink. The flowers are borne on the end of long stems and so make excellent cut flowers. They can be grown in a hot border and, if well fed and watered, should create a colourful display.

Looking Good:
Look out for bright Gerberas among the South African collections at the University of Bristol Botanic Garden, during July and August.

Best With:
Plant alongside other low-growing plants such as Gazania (Gazania).
