Gazania (Gazania)

Gazania (Gazania)

Gazanias are always smart and colourful, coming in a variety of bright colours. They're tropical-looking and will thrive in dry, hot conditions - the ultimate drought-tolerant plants. Best grown as annuals each year, they will persist in window boxes and hanging baskets. They're also perennials.
Price: £2.50 for seeds, or £1.50 for a plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Half-hardy annuals
  • Height: 25.4cm(10in)
  • Spread: 33cm(13in)
  • Situation: The hottest, sunniest place you can find
  • Soil Type: Medium to rich
Gazanias come in lots of brilliant colours - pinks, yellows, oranges and reds, often with a kind of metallic sheen. They are great for hot borders, or Mediterranean gardens, or for scree gardens, the tops of walls or old-fashioned rockeries.

They originally came from South African meadows and will always do well in full sunshine. They like their soil warm and well-drained and, in ideal conditions, they will spread.

There are some colourful hybrids such as Chansonette Series, Daybreak Series and Talent Yellow that are worth investigating. Shown here is the Kiss Pomegranate variety. To keep them producing flowers, dead-head regularly. If you want more, divide the substantial roots.

Best With:
Pink Lampranthus - another species that likes it hot.
