Hyacinth (Hyacinthus Orientalis)

Hyacinth (Hyacinthus Orientalis)

We can all try our hand at growing hyacinths at home, either on the windowsill in a glass jar, in a wide bowl or outside in a border. Whether or not we manage to get them to flower indoors at Christmas, the scent is overpowering from the magnificent towers of flowers. Shown here is 'Amsterdam'.
Price: Expect to pay about £7 for 5 bulbs.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Bulb
  • Height: 27.97cm (11in)
  • Spread: 15.24cm (6in)
  • Situation: Partial shade to full sun
  • Soil Type: Rich compost
Hyacinths have commanded a great deal of attention and enthusiasm over the years, and a huge variety of colours is available. Their popularity never wanes because they are so easy to grow both indoors and outdoors. They make excellent houseplants, prized for their heavy scents.

Hyacinths have such large and generous flowers that they need to be staked to stop them falling over and being wind-damaged. They make super colour displays in borders. Digging them up to dry the bulbs out is the best way to ensure a repeat performance next year. You can also buy seeds of some species, but this will not produce instant results.

Looking Good:
Check out the perfume from the gardens at Anglesey Abbey, Lode, Cambridge, during May.

Best With:
Use them in close proximity to tulips.
