Common Camellia (Camellia Japonica)
Camellias give enormous value for money, and have so many good-looking species and cultivars. They have evergreen foliage and plump buds through the winter that open into wonderful blooms. Camellias can be for life, as they become major structural elements in the garden, providing screening and backing to borders.
Price: Expect to pay about £15-£25 for a sound plant with masses of buds.
The Knowledge
- Plant Type: Perennial
- Height: 7.6m (25ft)
- Spread: 7.3m (24ft)
- Situation: Shady to sunny spot
- Soil Type: Acid soil only
Common Camellia exists in many other cultivars of red and pink and in double forms, and these often have longer flowering periods through spring. It is worth taking the trouble to find the best cultivar for your garden and to only plant into acid soil.
Looking Good:
Go to the spectacular gardens of Caerhays Estate in Cornwall in early spring to see the camellias, magnolias and rhododendrons.
Best With:
Grow an early vigorous clematis through its branches. Try Clematis montana.
