Hosta (Hosta)

Hosta (Hosta)

Hostas are good-lookers in many situations. They are perfect for shady gardens and light woodlands, and they are just right for patio pots and herbaceous borders. Their flowers are a satiny mauve and white. They are, however, less than perfect when slugs have been at them. Shown here is 'Golden Prayers'.
Price: Expect to pay about £1-£8 per plant, according to variety.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Perennial
  • Height: 35.56cm (14in)
  • Spread: 66.04cm (26in)
  • Situation: Shady
  • Soil Type: Medium to rich soil
There are hundreds of Hostas from which to choose, and your local nursery will only have a few popular varieties. There are small-leaved Hostas, like the one featured here, and modern hybrids. They range in colour from those with dark, moody leaves to yellow and variegated forms. Their large and tall flower spikes en masse creates a great effect under the trees.

Part of the reason why Hostas are so popular is because they are very handy for landscaping, especially when set in mulch in shady areas. They are mercilessly gobbled by slugs and snails, though, so you'll have to control the pests if you want pristine Hostas (See Pest Control for tips on this).

Looking Good:
Check out the variety of Hostas at Cleave House, Okehampton, Devon, during July and August.

Best With:
Arrange on the woodland floor with other Hostas.
