June
June's Tips from Sven
There's a fair bit of work to be done in June, but pottering in the garden on a pleasant balmy evening isn't exactly a hardship, now is it?! Sven's tips for June include fertilising, pruning, deadheading and planning a summer project.
Planting
· If you haven't already done so, plant up containers, urns, butlers' sinks, troughs or pots for great summer displays.
· Now's a good time to plant out tomatoes. Train them up canes or string and see Tomato Trimming for care tips.
Maintenance
· Water everything well during long periods of dry weather. Terracotta pots dry out quicker so keep a close eye on them and water everything in the early evening when the sun is going down.
· Deadhead flowering plants such as roses and ornamental salvias to extend their flowering period.
· Check all climbers on a regular basis to ensure all wayward growth is tied in.
· When bearded iris have finished flowering, lift and divide.
· Move garden furniture regularly to allow your lawn to recover and to avoid yellow or worn spots.
· Be on the lookout for blackspot and aphids. See Pest Control for advice.
· Try to keep on top of the weeding. Do it with a glass of wine and it turns a dull chore into a pleasant pastime!
· Be vigilant with your hostas. Try a gravel mulch in pots or small piles of rolled oats in borders which the slugs will go for instead.
· Phylostachys bamboo will be shooting all over the place by now so if they start spreading too much simply slice off unwieldy shoots with a spade.
