Hepatica (Hepatica Japonica, form Magna)

In the wild, Hepaticas are found in light woodland among the leaf litter. They just love shady and rocky places in the garden, providing they are well-drained. They look good with their blue hues and wonderfully crafted leaves. Enjoy these early blossoms punching through the leaf litter.
Price: Expect to pay about £2.50 per plant. Ten seeds will cost £2.20.

The Knowledge

  • Height: 10cm (4in)
  • Spread: 17.78cm (7in)
  • Situation: Shade
  • Soil Type: Poor to medium rich
Hepaticas are named after their liver-shaped leaves. They are small but perfectly formed plants, not rampant or spreading, but precise and compact. Springtime encourages them to produce flowers that are usually blue but maybe white or pink. Recently there has been an increased enthusiasm for the double varieties of Japanese Hepaticas, of which there is a huge variety in form and colour.

Some varieties command huge money! If you are creating a wildflower garden, or are looking for some suitable planting below beech trees, then try Hepaticas. They blossom in the woods before the leaves on the trees have opened, giving extra colour to springtime vistas.
