Bluebell

Bluebells are part of the English woodlands and the familiar blue vista is unique to England. No-where in the world do bluebells grow so well. In the English garden they can be grown from seeds or bulbs (not collected from the wild). The look can only be achieved in shady areas.
Price: Expect to pay about £2.50 for 10 bulbs.

  • Height: 30.48cm (12in)
  • Spread: 12.7cm (5in)
  • Situation: Shade

Bluebells are for wildflower gardens, not for formal beds and sunny borders. Do not confuse these bluebells for Spanish bluebells (Hyacinthoides hispanica) that do like full sun, or campanulas that are known as bluebells in Scotland.

The quickest way to grow bluebells is to plant the bulbs in the autumn and wait for the results in the spring. Alternatively grow the seed and wait for three years before flowering.

The flowers are visited by honeybees and bumblebees collecting pollen and nectar. If the conditions are right, the bluebells will naturalise and spread, using their own seed dispersed during early summer.

Looking Good:
Go to beautiful Arlington Court in north Devon during May to see its splendid show of woodland bluebells.

Best With:
