Dalmatian Bellflower (Campanula Portenschlagiana)

Dalmatian Bellflower (Campanula Portenschlagiana)

A hardy perennial used to the extreme climate of Croatia's mountains, this garden beauty is a familiar sight on rockeries and walls. It is evergreen and produces masses of spectacular colour throughout the summer. Grow it at the top of a wall to hang down, or to form mounds of delightful colour.
Price: Expect to pay about 80p for a small starter plant.

The Knowledge

  • Plant Type: Perennial
  • Height: 55.9cm (22in)
  • Spread: 17.8cm (7in)
  • Situation: Rockery or wall
  • Soil Type: Sparse to peaty, well-drained
If you need a block of good colour on a vertical surface then this is the plant for you. It is a vigorous grower and its evergreen leaves soften its presence against rocks or masonry. It can look like it has always been there, as if naturalised along the top of a wall.
Frost resistant, it becomes part of the long-term structure of the garden. It is a traditional plant for walls, alongside white Alyssum and yellow Aurinia. More recently, though, there's been competition from the new cascading blue clematis, Crystal Fountain, that has a stem only a few centimetres long.

Looking Good:
Look out for the bright blues on walls and in rockeries during July. See them at the National Trust for Scotland's Inverewe Garden in the Highlands (Ross and Cromarty).

Best With:
Other blue campanulas, or white and yellow spring flowers.
