The Big Dig

This fascinating BBC series takes a wry look at the ever popular pastime of allotments, contrasting the traditional vegetable growers of South Wales with the nouveau 'allotmenteers' of North London.

Allotments are one of the fastest growing past-times in Britain today - the perfect place to chill out and tune in to nature. In some parts of the country waiting lists for plots are so long its easier to get season tickets for Manchester United or the last night of the proms - in fact it's so bad you can wait for up to ten years. And there's a bit of a divide emerging as more and more new allotmenteers with more and more new methods give the traditionalists a run for their money.

Presented by Simon Mayo, the programme investigates this growing divide between the old-school vegetable growers and the new "allotmenteers" who are taking a more modern approach to this time-honoured tradition. The show also contains a plethora of invaluable tips and features characters shot on location at two allotment sites, one in the Rhondda Valley near Cardiff and the other in Highgate, London.

The show kicks off with a tale of two plots as Simon follows two hugely contrasting sets of allotmenteers throughout the growing season. It's the beginning of April and that means it's time to plant out the first early potatoes, get the greenhouse in order, the bean frames up and practice the secrets of bio-dynamic planting.
