Hidden Gardens

In a celebration of design and plantsmanship spanning hundreds of years, Chris Beardshaw visits six diverse gardens from around the UK that are each undergoing major restoration work.

In the first programme, Christ is at Bridge End Gardens in Saffron Walden. The original plans of this early nineteenth century paradise have been lost, so the team has its work cut out restoring the dramatic Wilderness and the beautiful Dutch topiary garden to their Victorian glory.

Among the many other highlights are trips to Norton Priory, one of the largest monastic sites in Europe, and to Croome Park in Worcestershire, the first full commission by Lancelot "Capability" Brown. At Croome, Chris explores the extensive archive of the estate and, with the hydrology experts, revisits the problems Brown had draining vast areas of land. Later, two other design legends come under the spotlight when Chris travels to Boveridge Park in Dorset, the only garden to be created together by famous rivals Gertrude Jekyll and Thomas Mawson.
