Six of the Best Tulips
Tulips have a long history - they can be seen in 17th century paintings - and they're probably the most versatile of all spring bulbs. The range of available colours and forms is enormous and with a bit of basic care they should provide a fine display from as early as February until the end of May.They provide colourful highlights in mixed beds or as blocks of colour in formal beds and they're right at home in containers or on the windowsill too. The key to getting the best from tulips is to plan your planting carefully so that when the flowers have faded, other plants will be coming in to bloom. And plan early: September and October are the perfect months for planting since the soil in your garden will still be be warm and there should be time for good root development before the cold sets in.
Tulips are also a perfect flower for kids. Give them a selection of coloured bulbs, their own plot or just a small tub on the patio and help them plan out a design before planting. Then you can all enjoy the show next spring!
