Recipes

people's cookbook

I really enjoy this programme. The recipes are usually tried and tested ones that are not too complicated so most people can have a go at them- good honest food. It's also interesting hearing the background history that goes with them.

I tried the somerset apple cake recipe the other day, which uses sultanas soaked overnight in cider (the only variation I made to the recipe was to use butter instead of margarine- basically because that's what I had in the fridge). I took it along to a group from age concern that I visited the other day and it was a big success.
What do other people think about the series and has anyone tried any of the other recipes?

Yes it was a classic TV moment wasn't it! Good job they only needed a couple of slices.
On a different theme, there seems to be a huge outpouring of cookery programmes at the moment. I came across another one on BBC2 last night by accident when I switched on, called Beat the take away. There seems to be quite a few aimed at making cooking easy for people who wouldn't normaly cook , which I think is great. Maybe we will gradually turn back into a nation that can cook again but this time influenced by all the other styles of international cuisines we have around us.

I agree, their fate to some extent lies in the hands of the tv chefs who are often rushing to put the dish together and can be a bit heavy handed with this ingredient or that whilst the contestants look on nervously. I am sure this has affected the outcome on a couple of ocassions, going by some of the judges remarks. I still really enjoy the show though.

i like the recipes on peoples cookbook, but i wish it was the contestants themselves that we saw cooking the recipes. after all, they've been cooking them for years. i think that it would be a better format for the contestants to cook, with AWT and paul rankin acting as sous chef.
